Luke Bryan Meets The Media

| January 22, 2012

Shortly after he co-hosted the Countdown, Luke Bryan sat down with a roomful of Nashville radio reporters.  The conversation covered a wide range of topics from music to family to his tour with Jason Aldean.  It had been about 6 months since the release of Luke’s current CD, so there was a lot to talk about.

Let’s start with the current single, I Don’t Want This Night To End, there are certain lines that stick out, like “Taste your smile on my lips, get drunk on your kiss:” When you’re writing, when you continue to write songs about trucks and farms, you have to find different ways to say it.  You find ways to reword things to tickle your ears.  As a writer, you’re always pushing, I want to stay true to what country is, but say it in a fun way.

Thoughts on the success of the song: I turned the album into the label, and they asked what I wanted for the first single, and I said “Country Girls.”  They weren’t too sure, and I stuck to my guns, but everybody signed off on that, and we all know what that did.  Then we talked about the second single.  The label wanted I Don’t Want This Night To End, and I was terrified about it.  I wanted Drunk On You instead.  I went with what they wanted.   Now this has become a bigger song than Country Girl.  That’s hard for me to imagine.  I always dreamed of being in this spot, and it’s real cool being here.

Will you do more hosting with Ellen? I’m up for anything.  It shows people I can do that.  It can be a challenge to host a red carpet before performing on the CMA.  Ellen was nice to let me do that.  I just have fun, not sweat it, have a good time.

You’re about to begin the My Kinda Party tour with Jason Aldean.  It’s your second time out with him.  Why did you want to do it, and what will be different?  Jason & I wanted to do one more year.  Jason had done a couple years with Flatts.  My main thing is you can’t step out too soon as a headliner.  I felt this year, it would be presumptuous to headline.  I need more hits.  So now to be out with Jason, I’m here to add what Jason has.  To do the CMT Tour gave me a taste of the headline thing.  I’m excited that 95% of my show will be my hits.  Jason & I planned up fun stuff to do together.  I just wanted to do one more year with him.

Lauren Alaina is also a part of this tour, and all three of you are from Georgia: My main thing is, I can bet you this fall we’ll all be watching Georgia Bulldogs football.  I think the rural life in Georgia influences how we all sing.

How were the holidays:  We learned a lot on this break.  It may be the last time we spend Christmas in my home town.  With two boys it can be tough.  So we’ll stay in Nashville next year.  My wife & I went on a trip for our 5th anniversary.  When you do what we do, it’s hard to sit at the house, or go to bed before 10.  But it’s nice to get time off and recharge the batteries.

CMA Fest: I’m looking forward to it.  I haven’t played on the main stage in three years.  I’ve had a lot more hits since then.  That week’s exciting for me, when the fans are in town.  Interesting that even in hard economic times, CMA has been growing.

Spring Break CD: We’ll go in the studio next week.  It’s becoming fun, because at the beginning of the year I don’t have anything written.  I have a core group of writers who come in with ideas.  That thing has continued to grow each year.  The fact that I can be in my 30s and still go to Panama City and party is cool.  We have a song called Spring Break-up that may be the title.

Drunk On You: Not to jinx it, it’s probably my most anticipated song ever.  I felt it was a big song, and every big song has a memorable line, and this one will be called the boom0boom song.  It’s a cool sexy summertime song, everything I want my music to be, we play it live and the fans love it.  It’s like it’s a hit already.

The video is a continuation of I Don’t Want This Night To End: That’s right, same feel, same flair, and so we’ll ride that a while.

Valentine’s Day: My last year’s Valentines was the first time I was home.  Always fun when that happens.  We went to a hotel, got a nanny for the boys, and just chilled out.  It’s nice when we can take some time on our own.

ACMs in Vegas: I love to stand around a craps table with my buddies.  I’m not going to win money.  But some contest winners will be able to play some craps with me.

Christmas with the boys: Bo has one thing he wanted for Christmas.  He asked Santa for boxing gloves, Santa asked why, and he said, “So I can punch daddy in the butt.”  He got them, and there’s video of him punching daddy in the butt.  All four of us were in one room at my brother-in-law’s house.  The boys kept waking each other up, so I took Tate to a recliner chair and we slept there all night by the Christmas tree.  I slept 45 minutes, and then loaded up the tour bus for the ride back home.

Social media: I learned a lot about that this year.  I learned the power of Twitter, and I’ll use it in a more positive fashion.

Tony LaRusa: I did Tony LaRusa’s animal rescue charity this past weekend.  He’s been great to me and my family.  It was a great opportunity to do some charity work in St. Louis.  It’s funny, I grew up deer hunting and fishing, but I love animals.  Nobody wants to be cruel to animals.

More about the video for Drunk On You: I don’t want to give too much away.  At the end of I Don’t Want This Night To End, there’s a “to be continued,” and she may make her way to a show someday.  A lot of my videos have been fun, but this was my first to show my acting, and it’s fun to play roles, and there’s more of that in this next video.

What are you doing for the Super Bowl: What’s funny is that with being a dad, I got home the other day, and there were two big games on, I wanted to watch Green Bay, and the boys wanted to play, so football takes a back seat.  We’ll probably have a big get-together, but I don’t get as jazzed up as I used to.
