Joe Nichols Celebrates CD & More
Joe Nichols has a whole lot to celebrate as we end 2011. First of all, his lifelong favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals, won the World Series. His favorite college football team, the Arkansas Razorbacks, are having their best year ever. Plus he’s released his 6th album, one that sums up everything in his life called “It’s All Good.”
Joe told us he was in a great place personally when he made this record, and it carried through the entire process. “Being in a good place, I went into making this record with no baggage. I sang it the best I could. The number one thing I wanted with this record, is to make a good record, don’t care who it makes mad, and we did that. The happiness in my voice is the comfort in my mind saying I’m gonna make this record the way I wanna make it, and I don’t care who it makes mad.”
One song in particular Joe is proud of is the final song, “How I Want To Go.” He said he identified with every word: “What drew me to this song was the striking resemblance to my life, it’s close to my life story, I literally thought I’d go out of this world guns a-blazing, probably earlier than I anticipated, going down swinging, doing everything I could to end it all quickly. But that changed, the way I’ve changed my life to not living wreckless, living with purpose, and with somebody I wanna live for, that describes me how I envision myself, hopefully 40-50 years from now, thinking I’ve lived a good life, turned it around, and all’s good.”
His wife Heather has a favorite on the album: She’s Just Like That. “It reminds me of my wife, very into Jesus, Keith Whitley, and very country girl but by God she’s a ball of fire. I sing all the time in the car. So does she, she won’t admit she. She’s constantly telling me to turn it down so I can listen to Keith Whitley.” By the same token, Joe’s wife isn’t a fan of a song called “No Truck, No Boat, No Girl: “It’s her least favorite song I’ve done in a while. She goes, if he’s done something wrong, by God he deserves not to have a truck, boat, or girl. I explain to her that he screwed up, and he’s lonely without the three most essential things in life. It’s a true guy song.”
The conversation turned to the World Series, and his Champion St. Louis Cardinals: “It’s bittersweet, I feel bad for the Texas Ranger fans, because I live in Texas, but more sweet than bitter because I’m a huge Cardinals fan. This year is the most special year of any baseball team. Just the run they had, coming back from 10-1/2 games out, going on an amazing run, having some luck, beating the three best teams in baseball, the Brewers, the Phillies, and the Rangers, and they pulled it out at the end, Tony LaRussa retired, it’s pretty magical. I had to temper my excitement because my wife’s a Rangers fan, and all her family are Rangers fans, my friends texted me, and I’d have to read them in secret, I wish I could go crazy. But I feel bad for the Rangers fans.”
Then, we talked about Arkansas Razorback football. Joe told me he was actually on stage this past Saturday night during the Arkansas-South Carolina game: “I had updates of the game in my ears, while I was on stage, they gave me score updates of the South Carolina-Arkansas game. I was extremely proud of the boys, best game I’ve seen them play all years, they look legit. It could be a special year. We’ll see in Baton Rouge on November 25th.”
Look for Joe to do all he can to promote his new album, “It’s All Good.” He told me he hopes to join Toby Keith on the road in 2012.
