Brad & Carrie on “Remind Me”
This week’s co-hosts, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, came together in our studio to tell the story behind their superstar #1 duet “Remind Me.” The song has already sold almost a million downloads. But it actually was the very last song recorded for Brad’s current CD. When he joined Lon Helton for Country Countdown USA last May, he talked about calling Carrie with the idea for the song. We played that story for Carrie and got her reaction: “I trust Brad, but what would you have done with that phone conversation? You get this snippet of may be this could be something awesome, there’s some glimmer of promise in that phone conversation. But it turned out pretty fate-like, because I wasn’t gonna head back to Nashville. I was going to Canada. I said, ‘OK I can swing by Nashville on my way to Ottawa.’ The next morning, when I was ready to fly back to Nashville is when my husband got traded to Nashville.”

Was the song a little more done when you got to the studio? (C): A little more, even he said ‘Don’t listen to my words, cause they’re not right yet.’ (B) I was still trying to get it exactly right. That was only 48 hours after we talked on the phone. I was working with my co-writers the whole time, and we focused on her lines. We knew the choruses, and I knew my verses were going to change. (C) Yeah it changed a lot from when I recorded my part and I heard the finished song. (B) The choruses weren;t changing a lot. That song was a bit of a puzzle. What are the ways you can say ‘Remind Me.’ We came up with a bunch of scenarios that we wanted to see in the song, who says what, we had enough of a skeleton that we could get her part done at least. (C) This is the song I get the most feedback from friends. But it’s not he sings a verse and a chorus, it’s in a different order, which makes it different from other duets. This song doesn’t work without two people.
