Shania: Book Is For Fans & Aja
Shania Twain has tried to live a private life. Part of the reason she moved to Switzerland was to escape the fame that had engulfed her life in the 90s. But when she started writing her autobiography, she knew it was opening part of her private life to the public. She told Country Countdown USA host Lon Helton, “My personal life was kept very closed. But I came to a point where I needed to address everything in order to free my voice, if you will, because it started to manifest itself and really create problems with my voice. So I went through this process, and instead of going to a therapist, I went the long way around and wrote an autobiography in an open and honest way in order to get everything out.”
Part of Shania’s personal life revolves around her son Aja, who is now 9 years old. Shania told Lon she had Aja in mind as she wrote the book. “It’s difficult for kids to deal with celebrity parents. When the divorce happened, it was probably more difficult than dealing with celebrity. He hadn’t been exposed to my celebrity. What happened was when you have a divorce, that gets printed everywhere. I thought Aja will read these things someday. So I’m better off to address it and give him something he can understand and relate to without being surpised. I thought the best way to do it, write it all down, so if I’m not around to explain it myself, he has the truth and he has the story. I want him to understand it from my point of view. Documenting it for me was very important. When the time is right, then he’ll learn about my life, but for now, he’s involved in little bits and pieces.”
