Sara Evans is Mother’s Day Co-Host
Sara Evans will join Lon Helton as Mother’s Day weekend co-host on Country Countdown USA. She tells Lon, “My idea of a dream Mother’s Day is to play sports, so that’s what I hope to do. Like on Easter, we had several families over for a big mean and then we went out and played a 2-1/2 hour softball game.” Between them, Sara and Jay have enough children for their own team. Sara has 3 and Jay has 4, all under the age of 12. Sara says they all know how to pamper mom. “Jay is the sweetest husband, and every time I travel for work, there are flowers waiting for me when I get back from Jay & the kids. Just to make me feel special, to say ‘Thank you mom for all you do for us.'”
This is Sara’s first time as co-host since she married Jay Barker on June 14, 2008. She relocated from Nashville to Birmingham Alabama, where Jay hosts a sports-talk radio show. Sara tells Lon that Jay is the family’s biggest celebrity in Alabama. “He’s Elvis down there. Sports are so important, he won the National Championship for Alabama in 1992, so the kids think it’s pretty cool that their mom’s a country singer, but ‘Dude! Your dad’s Jay Barker!’ ‘There’s Jay Barker and that singer of a wife.’ I have to walk behind him and hum ‘Born To Fly’ to remind people who I am.”
Sara describes her role as mother this way: “I always try and be a soft place for them to land. So I’m cooking all the time, trying to make them comfortable, I always try to smile all the time, I think that’s what a mother does. That’s what I want them to come back to. My mom was always soft-spoken. So that’s what I try to be.”
