Inside Miranda Lambert’s Closet

| May 31, 2014

Miranda HOF 5-14-14 2Miranda Lambert is the latest country star to open her closet for an exhibition at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum.  The 5-time Female Vocalist of the Year now joins Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift for an exhibit called “Backstage Access.”  Miranda hosted a media preview for the exhibition, and talked about putting her personal items on public display:

So how does it feel to have your stuff at the Hall of Fame? “I cannot believe it.  I’ve been sending stuff to the Hall of Fame, and to see it here now in person, they did such a beautiful job of making it real.   Everything here has been part of my life for the past year and a half.  It brought back memories from what has happened.  It’s crazy that it’s in the Hall of Fame!  I can’t process it yet.SAM_0899

You’re such a confident woman anyway, but does it give you even more confidence now to have an exhibition here?  “On an insecure day, I could drop that on myself, ‘I’ll just go to the Hall of Fame and see myself!’  But when you grow up wanting to be a country singer, the Hall of Fame is a place you dream of being in way down the line.  So being here now on my fifth album, it’s humbling.  But also, if I never make it into the Hall of Fame, I already have, so I can say, ‘I’ve been in the Hall of Fame!'”

Where have these ‘artifacts’ resided over the last few years? “Well some of the places have been scary.  It was kind of funny where they came from.  My road case, which is here too, but some of them were in the road case when it was delivered.  I’m not an organized person, believe it or not.  So I had to dig through the closet, and see a dress all wadded up, and say, ‘They want this?’  Then you see it on display and it looks beautiful.  But I keep stuff everywhere, I’ve got a farm house where I keep stuff, our house, on the bus, and it’s just been collected and brought together and found a home.”

Were you involved in how it was laid out here? No, I didn’t have a part in that, they’re good at their job.  I love surprises and didn’t want to see it until it was done.  I didn’t know their vision, but trusted them, and knew it was going to be amazing.  I sent the stuff and the first time I saw it was when it was done, and it’s overwhelming.”SAM_0910

Some of your tweets are included.  How does that make you feel?  “Who knew that tweets would be part of a Hall of Fame exhibit.  It’s such a different thing.  I was reading the tweets and don’t even remember some of them.  But it reminds you to be careful what you tweet.  It may be part of the Hall of Fame someday.  I think I’m going to have to stand there and absorb everything.  I paid attention more to how pretty the stuff looked than reading my own tweets.”

What do you think people will learn from seeing this? “I think people will see all aspects of what this entails.  This as a whole meaning the road and this business.  There’s everything from a red carpet dress to a video outfit to a stage outfit to a backstage room setup.  It’s really done so well to show every part.  It’s Backstage Access and it feels that way to me.  Because I see all the different pieces of my life displayed.  So people will now see what that looks like up close and personal.”SAM_0912

How does it feel to be here at this point in your life?  “At 30 years old, to have my life on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame makes me look at my life and the people who also have exhibits here makes me think ‘I can’t believe I’m here, I can’t believe I’ve accomplished enough to be here and have a space in this building.  But it makes me want to work even harder, because I want to have a place in this building for a long time.”

Talk about your style and how it’s developed during your career: “I started out with different stylists, looking for my style.  I feel like at home I’ve got my style down, it’s jeans and a t-shirt.  But when it came to red carpets and events, I really struggled in finding someone who understood my style and my body.  I had a lot of bad experiences that made me feel insecure about the way I looked.  So to go out in public and not feel good about yourself is an awful feeling.  It’s important to feel your best when you go out there, because it’s on your face and body language if you don’t feel comfortable.”

SAM_0897Will Platinum be the theme for this tour?  Yes, Platinum is definitely the theme for this tour.  It’s a whole new set, new set-list, whole new look, we’ve added two new band members.  I now have a steel player, and a new backup singer: Carolyn Dawn Johnson.  It’s a whole different feel, the stage will be silver and shine.  Platinum!

Has your family seen the exhibit? None of my family is here today, none of them have seen it yet, but they’ll be here for CMA Music Fest, Blake will be here, so I’m excited for people close to me to see thing.  It’s crazy that no one’s here.  My mom’s usually here, but she’s here in spirit.

Does this exhibit feel too personal? “You know, I was worried about it feeling too personal.  I’m a little bit protective of my stuff.  I don’t know why.  I guess as a girl, you’re like worried about people seeing your dresses, because it shows your body, you’re hanging out there.  Even though it’s on a mannequin, you were wearing it.  But when I saw it, it didn’t feel that way at all.  I was really proud of it.  The way the dresses were hanging on the mannequins, it’s really beautiful.  It looks real, and it looks great.  They have pretty lights shining on it, all the bling is shining,  it looks like something you’d see at a museum!
