Carrie’s Good Girl #1 Party

| August 30, 2012

Carrie Underwood celebrated the success of her latest #1, “Good Girl,” at a party this past week at CMA Headquarters in Nashville.  Before the party, Carrie met with the media, and took a lot of questions about various subjects going on in her life:

Good Girl #1: Of course when you think of a first single from a new album, for me I like to think of an uptempo that I can sing everywhere, so when I first heard it I thought it would be fun to sing.

Just got back from a world tour: We did get the chance to go to London and Australia, only did one show in London and five in Australia, I didn’t know what to expect, didn’t expect to be known, felt like we made a big splash and have plans to go back soon.

What can fans expect in the tour?  Can fans expect interaction with Hunter Hayes?  That is the plan, we haven’t tried something yet but we’re talented individuals, we’ll find someway to sing together.  But we are in rehearsals this week.  After that we do production rehearsals.  I can’t wait to see the production myself, because so far we’ve only seen artist renderings.  I can’t wait o see how it’s gonna look.  We tried to make everything a great story, lot of toys, so we’re able to make a really big show.  Lot of dramatic costumes, no two shows will be exactly the same, so I’ll have lots of options.

What do you think about the Idol judge situation? There has been a lot of rumors, but I think it would be wise to have a country person in.  You look at the track record of American Idol, there’s me, Scotty, and Lauren so there’s obviously a want for it from the Idol audience, so it makes sense they’d have someone they know and love as a judge, and all the names they’ve thrown out have been solid names, so I’m excited like everyone else to see who it’s gonna be.

Rehearsing for CMA Awards with Brad? We actually had our first in-person meeting in this room yesterday.  This is our fifth year, we’ve figured out our roles as to who does what, we keep our eyes open who we can pick on, we don’t want to offend anyone, but we just want to get better at what we do.

The first time I heard Blown Away, I loved it because it was so different from anything I’ve done before, and that was attractive to me, I always want my albums to sound different, and that one was so dramatic and juicy.  It was great to do something I’ve never done before, the response has been great, and it opened the door for the album, to the tour, that song has allowed me to do different things, and made the tour more dramatic, and more of a juicy story, I get to tell these stories on stage, not just with my voice, but with everything around it, which is really cool.

They’re doing a VH-1 Behind The Music on you: First when I heard they wanted to do one on me, I was like, are you sure?  I felt I had a charmed life, great family, I haven’t overcome a lot of things, just a small town girl who gets to do something cool.  I did a lot of interviewing for it, they talked to my mom, my friends, a lot of people in my life, so it’ll be fun for me to watch it.  I might learn something about myself.

No vacations, I read we went to Canada for a vacation, and that was a cabin in the woods.  Not very glamorous, we haven’t gone on a vacation since our honeymoon, although we went to Disneyland with Mike’s nephews and nieces.

Do you have a wish list of singles? I don’t really have a wish list.  I don’t do an album with 3 singles and filler.  But I have a few that have to be a single.  I always loved Good Girl and Blown Away.  I also like Two Black Cadillacs.  But I take input from others.  I didn’t put anything on the album I didn’t love.

It’s a totally different experience.  People ask me which I prefer, big production or intimate performance, and you can’t compare the two.  I feel like it gives us a new appreciation for the song when we take all the production away.  At some point I want to do an acoustic tour, if I could just sing, I’d be the happiest person in the universe.

CMA: He’s probably annoyed with me because I’m constantly texting him ideas, then we start talking about artists, who’s had a big year, we both keep our eyes and ears open.

Duet with Steven Tyler? He’s amazing, and Aerosmith is amazing, I love for opportunities to work with Steven, we have fun together.  We’ve been known to record a thing or two together.  I have no idea what’s going to happen.

Writing Good Girl: It was one of the last songs, I got to crash the writing session in LA, and so I showed up, they had a groove going, Chris is a mad scientist, he can play any instrument, at the end of a couple hours, we had a demo, one of the last songs we wrote, and it became the first single.  This time I changed my writing style, most of my good songs were at the beginning, because I have a short attention span, and that got better results, I didn’t get into a routine, it was better for me as writer.

Talk about the charity aspect of your tour? We did it a little bit on the last one, and the results were amazing.  So every ticket sold, $1 goes to the American Red Cross, it seems like we’re having so many disasters, it’s a great charity, so why not.

Any movies in the works?  There have been movies where it didn’t work out, but I read scripts and stuff.  There’s some stuff I’m really hoping comes together, that’s all I can say about that.

Do you hang up your awards and plaques?  Everything is loved and appreciated but it would be a mess if everything was on my wall. I have everything cataloged and we have a space where we put my tour wardrobe, stuff I’ve worn on award shows, we keep them where they get loved and appreciated, but I’m not narcissist.  My parents have some of them too.

Reading reports in the press? I definitely do not Google myself ever.  Usually someone else says something to me.  It’s never intentional, sometimes it’s my mom, I tell her never to read comments below the article.

You’re in the Pontoon video: We were doing a writers series in Boston, and one of the writers told me I was going to have to help him sing it, so they were playing it, so I jumped in, and they asked if they could use it, so I love Little Big Town, they were former tour mates, so of course they can use it.
