Trace Reveals His Secret Love

| August 4, 2011

Trace Adkins is a happily married man.  He & his wife Rhonda have been married for 14 years.  But there was a time back when he was a freshman in college that he had a secret love affair…an unrequited love.  He told Country Countdown USA host Lon Helton that it’s time to reveal that secret love: “When I was a freshman in college, I was playing football at Louisiana Tech.  I would eat on the training table where all the athletes ate.  The girls would eat there too.  At the time, the Lady Techsters were the national champions.  The point guard on the basketball team was so cut, I was in love with her.  But she was a rock star, and I was a piece of meat freshman on the football team, so I couldn’t talk to this girl.  So fast forward to a few months ago, I watching the finals of the NCAA Women’s Basketball, and there she was!  She’s the head coach at Baylor, it’s Kim Mulkey!  I told Rhonda, look!  There’s my girlfriend!  She goes, ‘Excuse me?’  But it reminded me that back then when I was a freshman, there was a song that was really popular at the time called ‘One In a Million Love,’ and that was our song.  She didn’t know it was our song, because she didn’t know I existed.  But anyway, I started to perform that song in my shows, and I tell that story every night before I sing it.  Somehow that story got back to Kim, and one day, a package arrives from Kim Mulkey, she sent me all this Baylor Lady Bears stuff, she has her own bobble-head, she sent me a copy of her book, and she’s been a good sport about it.  I appreciate it.”

Trace also tells this story on a special edition of his new CD, “Proud To Be Here,” available only at Target stores.  This version has a total of sixteen songs, including two live songs recorded at one of Trace’s shows.  He does two cover songs: “One In a Million Love” and “How Long.”
