Top 10 Tennessee Country Stars
This week’s co-host, Chris Young, was born in Murfreesboro, TN, about 25 miles southeast of Nashville. As he says in this week’s show, a lot of country singers live in the Nashville area. Only a few were born and raised there. That got us interested in putting together a Top 10 list of Tennessee Country Stars.
#10: Rosanne Cash- Was born in Memphis in 1955. At the time, her father, Johnny Cash, was recording for Sun Records.
#9: Darryl Worley- Also born in Memphis, but moved to Pyburn. He spent most of his life in Savannah TN. Best known for his 9-11 tribute, “Have You Forgotten.”
#8: Mark Wills- Born in Cleveland TN in 1973. Best known for hits “Don’t Laugh At Me” and “19 Somethin.'”
#7: Craig Morgan- Born in Kingston Springs TN in 1965. Has had hits with “That’s What I Love About Sunday” and “Hillbilly Yacht Club.”
#6: Chet Atkins- Born in Luttrell TN in 1924. Legendary producer and musician, creator of the Nashville Sound.
#5: Rodney Atkins- Born in Knoxville in 1969. Has had hits with “Watchin’ You,” If You’re Goin’ Through Hell,” and “These Are My People.” In this week’s chart with “Take a Back Road.”
#4: Kitty Wells- The Queen of Country Music was born in Nashville.
#3: Roy Acuff- The King of Country Music was born in Maynardville TN in 1903.
#2: Kenny Chesney- Was born in Knoxville in 1968, but grew up in Luttrell, home of Chet Atkins.
#1: Dolly Parton- Born in Sevierville TN in the Smokey Mountains in1946, she turned 65 in January. She just released her 41st album, “Better Day,” and has begun a world tour.
Honorable Mention: Miley Cyrus, Dottie West, Ronnie McDowell, Ken Mellons.
The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was born in Memphis.
